Bonava, a project developer active nationwide, acquired the final section of a 2.7-hectare plot in Cologne's Niehl district in November of last year. Approximately 300 residential units are planned for construction on this site in the coming years. The future design of the residential area, operating under the name "Feldgärten", has now been defined by the conclusion of an urban development qualification procedure.
The Cologne City Planning Office, together with Bonava, initiated the qualification procedure. This was done with the aim of finding an urban development solution that integrates harmoniously into the existing residential environment and meets the needs of future residents. A total of five architectural firms submitted their designs to the responsible jury for this purpose.
Jury decision and future steps
The jury's final vote took place in September. This body consisted of various stakeholders, including Dr. Siebert as District Mayor, other representatives of city and district politics, a specialist jury, and representatives from Bonava. From the submitted proposals, the design by the renowned architecture firm caspar. was selected as the winner. This firm collaborated with studio grüngrau, a landscape architecture office, in developing the concept and convinced the jury with its vision.
Maike Limbrock, Project Manager at Bonava and responsible for the "Feldgärten" project, expressed her satisfaction with the outcome of the procedure. She emphasised that a feasible design, suitable for the surrounding area, had been awarded. Further collaboration with the winning firm in the coming months and years will aim to progressively implement the concept for "Feldgärten" into reality. Thanks were also extended to all participating architectural firms for their high-quality contributions and to the jury members for their constructive cooperation.
The initial presentation of the complete concept by Bonava is scheduled for 12th October as part of a comprehensive public event. The official invitation for this will be published in the Official Gazette of the City of Cologne one week before the date.
