The REWE supermarket at NEO Leipzig, operational in Leipzig city centre since December 2023, is expanding its sales area. The extension involves an increase from 2,500 square metres to approximately 3,100 square metres. This measure is a response to consistently high customer demand and the positive development of the location, serving to strengthen the local supply function in Leipzig's urban context. The investment reaffirms the perceived attractiveness and potential of NEO Leipzig as a retail location.
Mr. Matthias Härzschel, the responsible REWE merchant, explained that the expansion of space and assortment aims to further optimise the shopping experience in terms of freshness, quality, and service. A key focus of the expansion is the development of the lunch offering. This addresses a specific need that is evident due to the city centre location. Härzschel emphasised the relevance of customer proximity and continuous adaptation to customer needs.
Development of the Basement and Further Establishments
Ms. Alexandra Wagner, Asset Manager at ec Advisors GmbH, interpreted the space expansion as a positive signal for the overall development of NEO. The short-term enlargement of the first city-centre full-range provider confirms the vision of a vibrant quarter with a diversified mix of uses. With the expansion of the REWE store, the basement of NEO Leipzig is simultaneously developing into a culinary destination.
In addition to the expanded REWE, the second food hall by operator Food Affairs Deutschland, Distrikt Marquet, will be established in the basement. Both concepts – the supermarket and the food hall – aim to create a place that goes beyond a mere shopping function, integrating enjoyment, encounters, and quality of stay. In particular, the area around the central fountain in the basement of the former department store is being designed as a future meeting point with a variety of gastronomic offerings.
The successful development of the REWE store, the establishment of Distrikt Marquet, and the new opening of a NIKE Flagship Store have resulted in the retail spaces on the ground and basement floors of NEO Leipzig being almost fully let. According to Ms. Wagner, only one final space on the ground floor is still available. The letting of office spaces on the upper floors is also progressing positively. Scaling Spaces, a provider of flexible office and co-working solutions, is experiencing continuous growth on the first floor. On the third floor, the fit-out of the new office premises for the headquarters of EEX and ECC will be completed shortly. The transformation of NEO Leipzig is thus progressing as an address for office, retail, gastronomy, and urban life in Central Germany.
