Interhome, a leading specialist in holiday homes in Europe, has initiated a new series of analyses focusing on developments in sustainable holiday accommodation. The first publication in this series is based on internal booking data and sheds light on the dynamics of sustainability in key European holiday home markets.
According to booking data for stays between June and September, reservations for sustainable accommodation in Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Switzerland more than doubled between 2020 and 2025. Within the same period, the share of sustainable holiday accommodation in Interhome's total summer bookings increased from 16.7% to 29.5%. This represents an increase of 12.8 percentage points and indicates a structural change in demand for seasonal properties.
Regional Differences and Specific Characteristics
The speed and nature of this development vary by market. In 2025, Italy recorded the highest share of bookings for sustainable holiday accommodation at 40.1%. Germany followed with 36.1% and Switzerland with 35.9%. While Spain (29.3%) and France (16.1%) also showed developments, they were at different stages. These data underscore the heterogeneous market conditions and the varying implementation of sustainability measures in the respective regions.
When considering specific sustainability features, recycling achieved the strongest cumulative growth between 2020 and 2025 across all five analysed markets, with particularly pronounced increases in France, Italy, and Spain. Electric vehicle charging stations recorded the most significant growth in France and Switzerland. Italy and Spain showed particularly strong development in the area of solar energy. The results illustrate that sustainability developments differ across countries, both in terms of current booking share and the increase in individual sustainability features.
Jörg Herrmann, CEO of Interhome, commented on the findings, stating that the company strives not only to recognise changes in the holiday home market but also to actively shape them. By regularly providing data-based insights, Interhome aims to facilitate informed discussion about the future of sustainable holiday home rentals and sustainable travel.
Investments in Sustainability as an Attractiveness Factor
Saskia Weber, Sustainability Director at Interhome, explained that the analysis shows property owners are increasingly investing in sustainability measures for their holiday properties. This is done, on the one hand, to increase attractiveness for guests, for example through electric vehicle charging stations, and on the other hand, to reduce operating costs, for instance through photovoltaic systems, energy-efficient kitchen appliances, and water-saving fittings. The efforts of the landlords contribute to continuously expanding Interhome's portfolio of sustainable accommodation, thereby increasing the booking share during the summer months.
