A significant housing construction project has been approved in the Balearic Islands, providing for the creation of 81 subsidised housing units. This measure is part of a broader strategy to address the need for affordable housing in the region. Implementation will be based on Law 4/2025 of 18 July 2025, which contains specific regulations for strategic housing projects.
The aforementioned law was developed to optimise the administrative processing of social housing projects. It enables accelerated handling and significantly reduces the overall project duration if the government classifies a housing project as being of regional interest. This underscores the focus on efficient project development and the rapid provision of housing.
Budget and Distribution of Housing Units
The Balearic Government has currently provided a budget of EUR 18.7 million for this specific construction phase. This financial volume is dedicated to the realisation of the 81 publicly subsidised housing units. The planned distribution of the housing units extends across various locations on the islands to ensure regional provision.
Of the 81 planned housing units, 48 are earmarked for Ibiza. A further 23 housing units will be built in Llucmajor, and 10 units are planned for Sencelles. This decentralised distribution takes into account the respective needs and conditions of the individual municipalities. As part of its overall strategy, the Balearic Housing Institute (IBAVI) plans to build a total of 1,200 social housing units in the Balearic Islands, which places the current approval in a broader context.
