The new Decathlon flagship store in Oberhausen has opened its doors at Brammenring. The construction and services company Goldbeck, active across Europe, was responsible for the realisation of the hall within approximately eleven months. A sports experience location, combining retail, sport, and quality of stay, was created across a sales area of 4,500 square metres. Goldbeck realised the new build at Brammenring 2 on behalf of DD-Unternehmensentwicklungsgesellschaft GmbH. In addition to the store, the site includes a 500-square-metre outdoor expo zone and its own sports park.
With this new branch, Decathlon expands its network in Germany to a total of 117 stores. The company is creating over 100 new jobs in the region. Niels Weißenberg, Branch Manager of Goldbeck West GmbH, emphasised that the systematised construction method enables the realisation of demanding buildings in a short time and with high planning certainty. He highlighted that building with system and individuality is not a contradiction, as architecture, usage, and Decathlon's specific requirements were consistently integrated into the building concept. The rapid realisation was the result of the close and collaborative cooperation of all involved parties.
Architecture and Sustainability of the Location
The architectural design of the new building sets accents. Parts of the facade are clad with wood, which is also used in the roof structure. A partially greened facade integrates natural elements into the exterior appearance. Inside, spacious sales and experience areas dominate, complemented by office and social areas. The building concept combines the requirements for a future-proof retail location with various sustainability aspects.
- —A large-scale photovoltaic system
- —Energy-efficient building services
- —A green roof
- —Insect-friendly designed outdoor areas as well as EV charging points
A rainwater retention basin is also part of the outdoor facilities. Abdelaziz Rachidi, Expansion Manager for the region at Decathlon Germany, explained that the new flagship store creates a place where sport can not only be purchased but also experienced. He underlined the importance of a modern, future-proof location that suits the brand and offers customers space for discovery, trying out, and meeting. The structural implementation of this idea was successfully achieved together with Goldbeck within an ambitious timeframe.
With this new location, Decathlon is pursuing a concept that supplements classic sports retail with extended experience and testing opportunities. Customers have the chance to try out products directly in various areas. Around 80 sports are represented in the store. A special area is Germany's second Van Rysel Shop-in-Shop, which focuses on performance cycling across approximately 300 square metres. Additionally, Rebike uses another roughly 200 square metres for professionally refurbished bicycles and e-bikes.
