The S2 Alliance was launched with the official signing of a joint declaration of intent. This new regional partnership aims to strengthen the business and innovation location in southern Berlin. The participating partners include Modell-Campus ringberlin, Resilience Technology Campus Marienpark Berlin, Netzwerk Großbeerenstraße e.V. and Unternehmensnetzwerk Motzener Straße e.V. The ceremonial signing took place in the Golden Hall of Schöneberg Town Hall, in the presence of representatives of the Alliance partners, the Senator for Economy, Energy and Public Enterprises, Franziska Giffey, and the District Mayor of Tempelhof-Schöneberg, Jörn Oltmann.

The S2 Alliance represents a first-time initiative that defines a common development area along the S-Bahn line S2. This alliance strategically connects industrial companies, technology-oriented start-ups, research institutions and administrative partners. The primary goal is to strengthen cross-location potential and increase the visibility of southern Berlin as a central innovation area. The participating locations are characterised by complementary competencies in future-relevant fields, including artificial intelligence, resilience technologies, energy innovations, digital production and additive manufacturing. The initiative was developed and funded independently by the partners, underscoring its character as a bottom-up project.

Networking and Location Development as a Focus

Cooperation within the S2 Alliance is intended to generate new opportunities for technology transfer, scaling and market development. Young technology companies and start-ups, in particular, are to benefit from the established networks. At the same time, new impulses from research and the start-up ecosystem are to be integrated into existing economic structures. The Alliance also sees itself as a concrete contribution to the implementation of the Berlin Senate's Deep Tech Berlin Agenda. The aim is to accelerate the transfer of technology-driven innovations into economic applications and to sustainably strengthen Berlin's competitiveness as a business location.

A significant success of the Alliance is the now possible realisation of the new S-Bahn station Kamenzer Damm, which is scheduled for completion in 2032. After many years of effort, in which S2 Alliance partners played a key role, a central infrastructural prerequisite is thus being created. The new station is intended to improve the connection of the innovation and commercial sites and to play a key role in the development of a coherent innovation corridor along the S2. This will increase accessibility and create new perspectives for a variety of stakeholders.

  • Expansion of climate-friendly transport options
  • Strengthening of cycling and pedestrian traffic
  • Development of multimodal mobility hubs
  • Improved connections to regional and airport transport

Joint Response to Future Challenges

The formation of the S2 Alliance takes place against the backdrop of comprehensive economic and social changes. Aspects such as digitalisation, decarbonisation, geopolitical uncertainties and a growing shortage of skilled labour pose significant challenges for both companies and public stakeholders. Through the structured networking of companies, site developers and administration, a joint approach to overcoming these challenges is to be facilitated. The aim is to share knowledge, pool resources and formulate concerns where a coordinated approach generates the greatest added value for the region.
