Deutsche Bahn InfraGO AG has completed a significant phase of the ongoing core refurbishment at Frankfurt Central Station with the commissioning of the first retail units on Level B. These measures, which have been underway since 2021, aim for comprehensive modernisation and an increase in user comfort. Frankfurt Central Station is a frequentation point for up to 500,000 people daily and is a central transport hub in Germany.
The redesign of Level B includes the creation of new barrier-free accesses, improved orientation, and the integration of modern shop spaces. In total, around 30 new shops will be created there across an area of 10,000 square metres. The opening of the first shops took place on 25 June, following the re-commissioning of the modernised access at Kaisertor at the end of May, which particularly eases access for travellers with reduced mobility.
The project is part of an extensive Master Plan designed to secure the future viability of the station. The Federal Government, DB InfraGO AG, and the State of Hesse are jointly investing approximately EUR 375 million in Level B, which functions as an interface between long-distance, regional, and urban transport. The refurbishment includes complete gutting, professional hazardous substance remediation, and a more open, brighter, and clearer design of the former shopping arcade. DB InfraGO AG is continuing the Master Plan with over 20 individual projects, one of the most comprehensive redevelopment measures in the station's history.
Dr. Katja Maaser, Project Manager for the Master Plan, emphasised that it is not solely about creating new spaces but about redesigning an important transport hub. The goal is to establish Level B not only as a transport node but also as a place that invites travellers to linger. The renovation work optimises traffic flow through the creation of a multi-storey atrium, which forms a clear spatial centre and improves both movement flows and intuitive wayfinding. This new space creates a direct connection to Level B and enhances the quality of stay as well as the provision of services.
The complexity of the construction measures during active rail operations, while maintaining the S-Bahn and U-Bahn tracks, represents a significant challenge. The consulting firm Drees & Sommer SE supports DB InfraGO AG in this project with construction supervision and the review of working and assembly drawings. Stephan Ernst, Overall Project Manager at Drees & Sommer, underlined that a refurbishment of this magnitude, while operations continue, is an exceptional situation. The reopening of the Kaisertor and the new shopping gallery demonstrate that high quality standards and uninterrupted operation are compatible.
The construction progress follows a structured scheme that includes the activation of existing media, hazardous substance remediation, demolition, shell construction and interior finishing, as well as technical installation. New ventilation centres, electrical engineering rooms, and storage and staff rooms are being created in the lower levels. Simultaneously, the areas of anchor tenant Verkehrsgesellschaft Frankfurt am Main (VGF) are being refurbished according to the same scheme. All shop areas will be equipped with basic technical facilities to enable tenants to carry out uncomplicated fit-outs. The redesign also affects public areas such as walkways, stairwells, escalators, and staircases. The complete completion of the construction work on Level B is planned for late summer 2027, with the entire Master Plan continuing until 2035.
