The modernisation of existing building stock often presents a challenge in the area of digital infrastructure. Gira has responded to this requirement and developed a solution with the new 2-wire IP converter, which allows existing 2-wire door communication systems to be upgraded to IP technology without the need for new cabling. This system uses the existing wiring for both data transmission and PoE power supply. This significantly reduces the structural effort, which is particularly important for retrofitting in occupied existing buildings.
Creating new cable routes in existing buildings is typically associated with considerable effort. This includes opening walls, subsequently restoring surfaces, and coordinating work in inhabited or operational areas, which is both time-consuming and costly. The Gira 2-wire IP converter integrates the existing 2-wire cabling structure into the new system. This enables the transition to IP-based door communication without a complete reinstallation of the infrastructure. The products have recently become available.
Economical Modernisation and Planning Security
Jan Hoffstadt, Product Manager at Gira, notes that in existing buildings, the existing infrastructure often determines the economic feasibility of modernisation. The 2-wire IP converter expands planning options and allows for a gradual retrofitting of IP-based door communication with significantly less intervention in the building fabric. This method conserves resources and minimises disruption for users or residents.
The system consists of a host, designed as a DIN rail mounted device for the distribution board, and compact clients. These clients are installed directly behind the respective IP components, such as door stations, indoor stations, or cameras. A host can connect up to 15 clients. Due to the design, where clients do not require a direct line to the host, branched or looped-through 2-wire cable structures in existing buildings can still be utilised. Commissioning is carried out via a pairing button on the host and clients; a notebook is not required for this. Status LEDs provide feedback during commissioning and switch off when not in use. Operation is also possible without an active internet connection, and the known requirements of the European Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) were taken into account during development.
Range of Functions and Integration
After integrating the system into the existing IP network, the functions of the Gira IP door communication become available. Users benefit from high video and audio quality as well as the option to integrate external IP cameras. Depending on the features of the indoor station, functions such as image storage and remote access can be used. Door calls can be forwarded to mobile devices such as smartphones or tablets via the Gira TKS mobile app and answered even when on the go. The system does not require central servers or additional licences.
