In addition to their heating function, modern heat pump systems increasingly offer the option of room cooling. The company Nordwærme has developed a system that makes this functionality available by retrofitting underfloor heating in existing properties. This allows for constant room temperature control throughout the year, without the need for separate air conditioning units.
The technology is based on the principle of using the existing surface area of an underfloor heating system to dissipate heat in summer. Sönke Löser, co-founder of Nordwærme, explained that the underfloor heating thus serves to cool in summer and provide heat in winter. This is particularly relevant for existing properties, as rapid retrofitting is feasible. The large-surface operation of the underfloor heating minimises the risk of overcooling, as heat is slowly and evenly extracted from the room, without condensation problems or draughts occurring.
Process and Economic Viability of Retrofitting
The system is installed using a standardised procedure. First, the existing flooring is removed. Nordwærme then mills the channels for the heating pipes directly into the screed. After the pipes are laid, the channels are sealed. The final step involves laying new flooring by a specialist floor layer. This process also contributes to the visual enhancement of the premises.
- —Mill channels for underfloor heating into the screed.
- —Lay pipes and seal channels.
- —Optional: Contact with specialist companies for heat pump installations.
- —Connection work to the heating system and laying of new flooring.
The investment costs for retrofitting underfloor heating typically range between 3,000 and 5,000 EUR, depending on the room size and floor finish. Added to this are the costs for the flooring work. The entire measure is usually completed within two to three weeks, preparing the property for the heating and cooling season.
Eligible Measures and Further Advantages
Converting to underfloor heating with a cooling function significantly improves a property's energy balance. This qualifies owners for state subsidy programmes. For individual measures, up to 20 percent of the costs can be covered. If the system is installed as part of a comprehensive energy-efficient renovation alongside a new heat pump, subsidy rates of over 50 percent can be achieved. Sönke Löser emphasised that operating the underfloor heating in winter is noticeably more economical than with traditional radiators, leading to more efficient heat distribution with lower energy consumption.
Nordwærme focuses on milling the floor channels and laying the heating pipes. For the installation of a new heat pump, the company connects clients with regional specialist firms. This ensures a holistic solution, tailored to individual needs, for property owners seeking modern and energy-efficient temperature control for their living spaces.
