lexandria Real Estate Equities, Inc. (NYSE: ARE) and its venture arm Alexandria Venture Investments have received the 2025 Charles A. Sanders, MD, Partnership Award from the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH). The honor recognizes the companies’ leadership in creating a public‑private partnership that applies precision medicine to major depressive disorder. The initiative, called Multi‑Level Assessment & Phenotyping in Depression (MAP‑D), is a collaboration with the National Institute of Mental Health, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Department of Veterans Affairs, leading research institutions, life‑science firms, and patient advocates. MAP‑D seeks to replace the current one‑size‑fits‑all treatment model with individualized therapies guided by validated biomarkers and refined sub‑typing of depression.

“We are deeply honored to receive the FNIH Partnership Award,” said Joel S. Marcus, executive chairman and founder of Alexandria Real Estate Equities and Alexandria Venture Investments. “This recognition confirms our role at the forefront of the life‑science ecosystem and our impact in driving collaborations that improve human health. In the United States, major depressive disorder affects more than 21 million adults each year, with nearly one‑third experiencing treatment‑resistant depression. The economic burden exceeds $380 billion annually, rivaling the nation’s largest chronic‑disease health‑care costs. These staggering figures underscore the urgent need for better treatment options, and we are proud to have initiated and catalyzed this critical FNIH effort.”

MAP‑D has completed its design phase and will launch Phase 1 in May 2026, coinciding with Mental Health Awareness Month. The study will assemble one of the most comprehensive depression research datasets, validate new measurement tools, and create opportunities for therapeutic innovation. Over time, MAP‑D aims to deliver clearer depression sub‑type classifications, identify biomarkers to guide treatment decisions, and provide clinicians with practical tools to match patients to the most effective care.

Key objectives of the FNIH partnership include making data broadly available to qualified researchers, fostering transparency, accelerating scientific progress, and extending the study’s impact to other serious mental illnesses. For more information, visit the FNIH program page.
