The City of Aventura is mourning Soffer's death, calling him a "visionary developer and philanthropist" who transformed South Florida swamplands into the thriving community it is today. The city credits Soffer with developing what would become its heart, including Aventura Mall, residential communities, and the Turnberry golf course.
Soffer was not only a builder but also a "builder of community," known for his commitment to excellence, innovation, and public-private collaboration. He helped turn Aventura into a model city that continues to grow and flourish. The city is proud to have its high school bear his name and extends condolences to the Soffer family.
Born in Duquesne, Pennsylvania, on September 20, 1932, Donald M. Soffer graduated from Brandeis University with a Bachelor of Arts in economics in 1955. He went into construction and real estate with his father, developing suburban shopping centers before co-leading a deal to acquire swampland in Miami-Dade County, Florida.
Soffer founded Turnberry Associates in 1977 and expanded his footprint with other real estate projects like Turnberry Isle Resort and the purchase and restoration of Fontainebleau Miami Beach. His daughter Jackie Soffer currently leads Turnberry, while his brother Jeffrey leads Fontainebleau Development.
Many people in South Florida credit Soffer as the city's "founder," saying without him there would not be a City of Aventura. Outside of construction and real estate, Soffer was a major philanthropist, donating $15 million to Brandeis University and supporting numerous causes in education and the arts.
His funeral service will be held on Monday, July 21, at 10 a.m. in the Harry & Ida Soffer Sanctuary at the Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center.
