T
he Denver Broncos' ownership group, the Walton-Penner Group, has been exploring options for a new stadium since acquiring the team in 2022. The current site of Empower Field at Mile High, just off I-25 and Colfax, has been home to the team since its inaugural year in 1960.
Reports suggest that if a new stadium is built, it could be located elsewhere in Denver. Multiple real estate transactions linked to the Broncos have taken place near Burnham Yard, a state-owned former railyard southeast of the current stadium. The Broncos have begun buying land in this area, with 10 transactions totaling $150 million.
The team's lease for Empower Field at Mile High expires in 2031, and if these purchases are the first step towards a new stadium, it's likely that the team will not renew its current lease. A new stadium could potentially become a hub for high-profile events like the Super Bowl and NCAA Final Four, which often take place in state-of-the-art venues.
The Walton-Penner Group has also considered incorporating a retractable roof or making the stadium a dome, as mentioned by owner Greg Penner earlier this year. These moves are early stages of a larger plan for the team's future, with significant implications for sports in Denver.
