Business student explores new markets through real estate club involvement.

Lauren Johnson discovered a gap in GCU's curriculum: no real estate program despite her initial enthusiasm for the university.

L
auren Johnson, president of Grand Canyon University's new Real Estate Club, was drawn to the university's community and Christian lifestyle when she visited campus on a Discover GCU trip. As a business management major with an interest in real estate, Johnson noticed that her classes didn't focus much on this area, despite Phoenix being one of the nation's hottest residential and commercial markets.

Johnson credits a networking professor for introducing her to Danielle Popson, who encouraged her to start a real estate club at GCU. With the support of advisor Tim Kelley and industry connections, Johnson is passionate about creating opportunities for students in commercial and residential real estate.

The Real Estate Club aims to introduce students to career paths, provide access to education and licensing, connect them with professionals through mentorship and networking events, and educate them on various real estate topics. The club's first meeting attracted an overflow crowd, and Johnson is excited about the potential for growth.

Johnson, who will graduate in December, has already secured a full-time internship at CBRE and plans to specialize in development and impact communities. She believes that understanding property development can enrich individuals and provide opportunities for success in the industry.

The club's leaders, including secretary Emma Vandall and vice president Shanneille Ramos, are underclassmen who aim to build the club's foundation. Advisor Tim Kelley sees the club as a key aspect of business and economics education at GCU, providing students with hands-on experience and connections to professionals in the field.

A mentorship portal is being developed to connect students with internships and job opportunities, further fortifying the club's mission. Johnson believes that facilitating connections between students and industry professionals will be a win for the university and its students.
