Ex‑real estate agent arrested for alleged $1M theft

Woman alleges $900K theft; attorney says agent spent it on first‑class flights and luxury hotels—one of many cases.

F
ormer Tennessee real‑estate broker Joshua Spotts was arrested and is now in the Shelby County Jail after FOX13 Investigates uncovered evidence that he stole more than $1 million from clients. Licensing records show his broker license lapsed in August, and earlier this month it was invalidated when he tried to renew with a bad check—a pattern the station traced back to 2022. Spotts is now charged with property theft.

Attorney Randy Fishman has represented at least two victims who claim Spotts misappropriated their funds. One client, who had become dependent on Spotts, said he was also her neighbor. Spotts promoted himself on Instagram as “Joshua Spotts Realtor,” touting “The Best Spotts” listings across Memphis, yet the state’s licensing database lists no real‑estate or broker record for him. Fishman noted Spotts accessed multiple lines of credit and claimed a bank account, siphoning over $900,000 from a client who never saw the rent payments.

Spotts allegedly lived a lavish lifestyle—traveling to New York for Christmas, staying in first‑class hotels, and flying his wife and children. A chancery court case forced him to repay more than $900,000 after he represented himself. Multiple affidavits and complaints exist in criminal and chancery courts. A 2024 affidavit alleges he deposited bad checks at Orion Federal Credit Union, costing the bank $12,949.99. A 2025 criminal report details a woman who paid Spotts to manage a rental property but never received rent, losing $14,157.

Fishman said a new criminal case is unsurprising, comparing Spotts to a “little leopard.” State records list five complaints against Spotts and his former business, some pending. As of Thursday, no bail amount was set; he is scheduled to appear in chancery court Friday.
