Miami-Dade County judge ordered real estate broker George Pino to surrender by November 21 after charging him with felony vessel homicide related to a fatal boating accident that occurred over two years ago. The incident happened on September 4 when Pino, then 52, lost control of his 29-foot boat while driving near Boca Chita Key, resulting in the death of Lucy Fernandez and serious injuries to Katerina Puig and another victim whose name has not been disclosed.
Pino claimed he lost control after hitting a wave, stating that the wheel turned unexpectedly. Initially facing three misdemeanor charges, prosecutors have since upgraded the charge to felony vessel homicide. Although investigators found no evidence of alcohol being a factor, Pino declined a blood draw despite admitting to drinking two beers earlier in the evening.
In May, Pino's wife was ordered to pay $16 million to Puig's family as part of a lawsuit settlement. If convicted, Pino could face up to 15 years in prison.
