T
he former love nest of William Randolph Hearst, a ruthless businessman and media mogul, is now on the market for $22 million - a $4 million discount from its original price. The palatial two-story co-op, built in the late 1920s for his celebrity mistress Marion Davies, boasts cathedral-like architecture and precious European artifacts.
The Ritz Tower residence, located on the 19th and 20th floors of 465 Park Ave., was listed in May for $26 million, marking its first appearance on the market in the 21st century. Listing agent Michael Kotler attributes the price reduction to the current challenging market environment.
Hearst's unique home features a two-story great hall with a Venetian palace ceiling, 17th-century cathedral glass windows, and 16th-century monastic doors imported from Europe. The 11-room residence also includes interior balconies and triple-terraced views of Central Park, giving the illusion of being far away from Manhattan's hustle.
The current sellers are not in a hurry to leave, according to Kotler, who notes that the $4 million discount is significant but not drastic. The now-$22 million price tag includes antiques such as a 100-year-old Agra carpet and a 10-foot Vanderbilt clock, as well as hotel services like housekeeping and room service.
