Historic South Carolina estate linked to Thomas Ravenel's family sells for record-breaking price

The John Ravenel House on East Battery St. sells for $18.25 million, including $3 million in furnishings.

T
he historic John Ravenel House, a stunning pastel-painted mansion on Charleston's High Battery, has sold for $18.25 million, shattering the city's previous record of $15.25 million. The total sale price, including $3 million for fixtures and furnishings, reached $21.25 million.

Built in 1848 by John Ravenel, a prominent figure who pioneered Charleston's artesian wells and ran the South Carolina Railroad, the three-story stucco mansion boasts eight bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, and breathtaking views of Charleston Harbour and Fort Sumter.

Thomas Ravenel, a "Southern Charm" star, often took friends to visit the estate, although his family had not owned it in years. The current owner, Scott Bessent, purchased the property for $6.5 million in 2016 and has now cashed out big time.

The mansion's recent renovation, led by builder Richard "Moby" Marks and architect Glenn Keyes, transformed it into a luxurious compound with a cinema room, sunroom, pool, spa, and detached carriage house. The listing described the property as an "historic residence" reborn after a multi-year restoration following the 1886 earthquake.

"We are pleased to announce the successful closing of the sale," said Robertson Allen, co-listing agent with the Cassina Group. "This achievement is the result of exceptional collaboration and dedication."

The sale was sealed in just 39 days by Allen and teammate Scotty Brisson. The property's history is rich, with past owners including Dr. Saint Julien Ravenel, a renowned scientist and inventor, and his wife Harriet Horry Rutledge Ravenel, an accomplished author.

The listing highlights the mansion's period-perfect details, including original mantels, hardwood floors, and custom ceiling medallions. The walled grounds feature a pool, spa, and detached carriage house, while the rooftop deck offers harbor views.
