llinois Governor JB Pritzker has been revealed as the mystery buyer behind the record-breaking sale of two Ken Griffin condos at No. 9 Walton for $19 million earlier this month. The deal marks the priciest sale in Chicago so far this year and the fourth-highest ever, with Griffin selling the two unfinished full-floor condos on the 37th and 38th floors at a $15 million loss. Pritzker's purchase comes after Griffin spent years trying to sell off his Chicago properties, taking significant losses on some.
The two billionaires have a long history of political rivalry, dating back to Griffin's failed attempt to reelect former Governor Bruce Rauner in 2018 with a $20 million donation. However, the deal suggests that Pritzker and Griffin were able to put their differences aside for the sake of business. The property was purchased through a Delaware limited liability company called Chicago Skyline Properties LLC.
Pritzker's spokesperson confirmed the purchase but declined to comment further, while Griffin's representative did not respond to a request for comment. The deal is notable given the history between Pritzker and Griffin, who have clashed on several occasions over issues such as taxation and politics. Despite their differences, the two billionaires were able to come together for this significant real estate transaction.
