Luxurious Estate in Exclusive Celebrity Community Sells for $26.12 Million Near New York City

Niederhurst Estate Sits atop Bluff Overlooking Hudson River with Dramatic Basalt Cliffs.

A
stunning Victorian Gothic mansion in Snedens Landing, New York, has sold for a record-breaking $26.12 million in Rockland County. The estate, known as Niederhurst, boasts breathtaking views of the Hudson River and sits on 13 acres of land within the exclusive hamlet of Palisades.

The property's interior designer, Sara Story, worked with Chicago-based architect Dirk Denison to renovate the 8,000-square-foot residence, preserving its original brick exterior while adding modern touches like a sauna, cellar, lounge, and limestone-paved pool. The home features eight bedrooms, seven bathrooms, two powder rooms, and six fireplaces, as well as original details such as plaster medallions, brickwork, and moldings.

Built in 1874 by Winthrop Gilman Jr., the mansion has been meticulously restored to its former glory. The estate also includes Fern Lodge, a converted stables and barn with eight additional bedrooms and four bathrooms, as well as a former observatory where Gilman reportedly watched for meteors. The property's landscaping features copper beech trees imported from England in the 19th century.

Snedens Landing has long been a haven for A-list celebrities, including Bill Murray, Diane Sawyer, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Al Pacino, and Scarlett Johansson. The listing broker was Richard Ellis of Ellis Sotheby's International Realty, who reported that the property first hit the market in May for $28.5 million before selling for a record-breaking price.
