150-acre estate in Big Sur, listed at $100 million, is the Bay Area's most expensive residential property on public markets. If it sells for its asking price, it would set a record for Monterey County, surpassing the current high of $45 million paid for a home on Pebble Beach's 18th hole this summer.
The estate, known as "Heart of Rancho Rico," has been in the Chappellet family for four generations and was last sold in the 1960s. Cyril Chappellet, a former Lockheed executive, owned several properties, including this one, which features beach access via a private road, panoramic views of the coastline and Santa Lucia Mountains, three separate homes, and two campgrounds.
The main house, built in the 1940s, is the largest at 3,750 square feet with four en-suite bedrooms and three fireplaces. A mature fruit orchard separates it from the Ranch House, which has four bedrooms and two full bathrooms in 2,500 square feet. The Garden House, built in 2001, has three bedrooms and two full bathrooms in 1,960 square feet.
The property's sellers, C. Blake Forrest and his sisters Michele and Kira, inherited it from their mother and have spent countless family gatherings there over six decades. They hope the next owners will preserve its beauty for generations to come.
The estate is one of several high-end properties listed in the Bay Area, including a $78 million new build in Woodside, a Hillsborough estate on 2.3 acres asking $68 million, and a $55 million ask on a new build in Atherton.
