New Community Aims to Foster Kindness through Sustainable Development

Small towns see resurgence as Americans flee cities for a more neighborly lifestyle.

S
mall towns are experiencing a resurgence in popularity, with the largest number of Americans moving from metropolitan areas since the 1970s seeking a more neighborly atmosphere. One community is being built with this ethos in mind: Silverwood, a planned development in Hesperia, California.

According to University of Virginia researchers, an estimated 291,400 people moved into smaller towns or rural areas in 2023, with small towns and rural counties emerging as the top relocation destinations within the U.S. Many of these individuals are young adults seeking a quieter lifestyle surrounded by less stressed and more neighborly communities.

Silverwood is being designed to foster a culture of kindness, starting with a "kindness pledge" that residents will sign upon moving in. This commitment encourages residents to be engaged, helpful, and community-minded, both within the Silverwood community and beyond. The development's goal is to create an environment where neighbors look out for one another.

The concept for Silverwood was inspired by Tom Tait, a former mayor of Anaheim who ran on a platform of creating a culture of kindness in his city. Silverwood will feature "Village Greens" as community gathering spaces and smaller neighborhoods that facilitate resident connections. The development will also include social gathering areas, such as a clubhouse with a pool, pickleball courts, and play areas.

Silverwood's design prioritizes walkability, with 59 miles of off-street trails, 107 miles of paths and paseos, and 387 acres of parks. Residents will have access to outdoor activities like kayaking and lakeside picnics at Silverwood Lake. The development will eventually contain over 15,000 single-family homes, townhouses, and condominiums.

The first release of houses will include 646 homes with solar panels, ranging from 1,539 to 3,539 square feet. Home prices will start in the mid-$400,000s, making Silverwood more attainable for young families. Homeowners association fees will be reasonable at $158 per month and cover WiFi.

Prospective buyers are already lining up to reserve their spot in the kindness-centered development, drawn by its mission of creating a positive culture and encouraging kindness among residents. One such buyer, Savannah Routh, believes that Silverwood's focus on building strong relationships and having a close-knit community is essential for creating livable neighborhoods.

Community members gather in eco-friendly village promoting kindness and sustainable living practices globally.
