North Side Literacy Group Enters Real Estate to Help Refugees Find Homes

Northside Learning Center purchases and renovates adjacent property for expanded services.

F
atna Mohamed remembers the difficulties of finding a suitable home when she arrived in Syracuse from war-torn Sudan in 2011 with her family. Their initial North Side residence had only one bathroom and was plagued by cockroaches, making it hard to navigate their new life. As newcomers who didn't know anyone in the community and were still learning English, they faced a daunting task in improving their living situation.

Mohamed is now part of the Northside Futures steering committee, working to address housing challenges for families like hers. A vacant apartment house on Park Street will be renovated and rented to two families served by the Northside Learning Center, marking a step towards creating more stable homes for those in need.
