urray Hill's Third Avenue took on a quieter tone Monday after the sudden closure of Abbey Tavern, a beloved sports bar that had been a staple in the neighborhood for 60 years. According to an anonymous manager, the owners were unable to come to terms with their landlord, the building's co-op corporation, over rent.
A sign posted outside the closed venue at 354 Third Avenue announced its demise. The building above the corner spot is a 40-unit apartment co-op. Abbey Tavern had been a go-to destination for sports fans since 2014, when it reopened under its original owners after a brief stint as Vertigo and Manhattan Brewhouse.
Regulars were left stunned on Monday, having planned to gather for the College Football Playoff National Championship Game. "We're devastated," said one customer, who wished to remain anonymous. "This place was our home away from home – we loved watching sports here."
The bar's original charm included giant paintings of ocean liners and cozy booths, but it was its 12 large-screen TVs that made it a mecca for sports enthusiasts. Now, the space is available, with KSR listing the 4,000-square-foot venue on their website. The broker declined to comment on the closure.
