Palm Beach Estate Sells for $31 Million Amid Peak Season

Financier and wife sell Palm Beach home for $30.8 million in deal with Cox Enterprises family.

A
financier and his wife have sold their Palm Beach estate for $30.8 million in a deal linked to the Cox family, owners of media conglomerate Cox Enterprises. The property at 322 Clarke Avenue was purchased by a Delaware entity registered to Cox's Atlanta headquarters. Christian Angle had the listing, while Vince Spadea Jr. brought the buyer.

Cox Enterprises is a privately held company controlled by the descendants of its founder James M. Cox, with a combined fortune estimated at $26.8 billion according to Forbes. The company is led by Alex Taylor, great-grandson of James M. Cox. Cox heirs have long ties to Palm Beach, with several family members owning properties in the area.

The seller, Jay Horgen, is president and CEO of West Palm Beach-based investment firm AMG, which he joined in 2007. The Horgens purchased the Clarke Avenue house for $8.8 million in 2014. Built in 1929 on 0.4 acres, the six-bedroom, six-bathroom estate features a guest house and pool.

The property was originally built for Laurietta Ford von Stresenreuter and her second husband Charles Filipponi, who posed as an Italian noble in Palm Beach. The Horgens listed the house for $34.9 million in July before selling it for $30.8 million. Recent high-end sales in Palm Beach include a $81 million oceanfront estate sold by Louise Riggio and a $38 million waterfront home purchased by Herbert Wertheimer.
