Pasadena Landlords Comply with Rent Control Registry Requirement

Two-thirds of Pasadena's rent-controlled landlords sign up for database by Sunday's deadline.

P
asadena landlords are required by law to register their rent-controlled properties in the city's Rental Registry, a central database containing information on all rental units subject to rent control. By Sunday's registration deadline, 64% of the city's landlords or 4,729 rent-stabilized properties had signed up, leaving about one-third of property owners out of compliance. This is an increase from early this month when only 48% of landlords were registered.

The Rental Registry includes details such as property addresses, unit types, current rent, and landlord contact information. City officials will now focus on reviewing pending cases to determine the final number of registered units. Some landlords have expressed concerns about data security, but city officials assure that personal identifiable information will not be released publicly.

Landlords who fail to comply with registration requirements may face penalties, including tenants withholding rent, owners being prohibited from increasing rent, and property owners being unable to evict tenants. The Rent Stabilization Department prioritizes data security and adheres to strict protocols to protect landlords' information.
