T
he Real Estate Board of New York (REBNY) held its 129th annual gala, celebrating the industry's contributions to New York City's vitality. Notable attendees included Governor Kathy Hochul, Attorney General Letitia James, Mayor Eric Adams, and several U.S. Congress members.
"This marks a significant occasion as we gather to celebrate our shared accomplishments and address the challenges facing our region's economy and quality of life in 2025," said REBNY President James Whelan. The event honored seven individuals for their exceptional contributions to New York City's civic welfare and the real estate industry.
Attendees discussed the "City of Yes" zoning text amendment, which aims to build more housing in every neighborhood. Many supported Mayor Adams' efforts, with Whelan stating that moving forward on key commitments will make a huge difference for New Yorkers.
REBNY's social impact committee outlined its plans for the upcoming year, including affordable housing programs and educational resources for youth in marginalized neighborhoods. Jonathan Mechanic, chairman of the Real Estate Department, emphasized the importance of recognizing the industry's contributions to the city's health.
Outside the event, a group of protesters gathered, calling out REBNY members for alleged rent increases, gentrification, and selfish gain at the cost of working-class New Yorkers. Assembly Member Harvey Epstein joined the rally, advocating for a rent freeze and truly affordable housing.
The gala raised funds for social impact initiatives, with a portion of proceeds allocated to support these efforts. Tickets were listed online as $2,500 per person or $25,000 per table.
