The country’s visa framework is among the most welcoming worldwide. Retirees can apply for the Golden Visa, the Financially Independent Person permit, or the Digital Nomad Visa, which allows remote work while enjoying Greek life. These options make the transition smoother than in many European hotspots that have recently tightened their entry rules.
Healthcare is a standout feature. Greece scored 89 out of 100 on a combined quality‑cost metric, thanks to a robust private system staffed by internationally trained doctors. A typical couple spends roughly $288 a month on medical services, a fraction of what they would pay elsewhere. The country’s health infrastructure is consistently praised by expatriates and experts alike.
Housing remains affordable, especially along the coast. Seaside rentals can start at about $700 a month, with most properties ranging between $691 and $1,151. International Living estimates that a couple can live comfortably in many regions for under $2,000 a month, leaving ample budget for local cuisine, olive oil, and a glass of ouzo.
Climate is another draw. Those escaping harsh northern winters will find Greece’s hot, dry summers and mild winters appealing. While Athens can become sweltering during heatwaves, the numerous islands along the Aegean offer cooler retreats and a more relaxed pace.
The 2026 index also reflected shifting dynamics in other destinations. Panama, which topped the list in 2025, slipped to second place, while Portugal fell from second to fourth. Spain’s rising costs and tighter visa rules contributed to its lower ranking. Costa Rica, with its lush environment, and Mexico, Thailand, and Malaysia, remain in the top ten, alongside EU members such as Italy, France, and Spain.
Overall, Greece’s blend of affordable living, accessible residency, high‑quality healthcare, and pleasant weather makes it the most attractive retirement destination for 2026. Its island lifestyle, coupled with a welcoming visa regime, offers retirees a comfortable and vibrant place to spend their golden years.
