A
local investor, Jennifer Williams, is revitalizing aging properties in metro Jackson with the help of her family. The 35-year-old developer from Los Angeles took on the challenge of transforming Sunray Apartments, which had foundation problems, after initially considering passing on the project.
Williams' mother, who moved back to Mississippi from California, inspired her to get involved in real estate. She funded the renovation of eight units at Sunray Apartments, repairing the foundation and refurbishing both buildings with new amenities like paint, tile, appliances, and a surveillance system.
The developer's family played a significant role in the project, with cousins handling maintenance, lawn care, HVAC, and electrical work. However, Williams struggles with illegal dumping on a vacant lot across from the units and hopes the city will take action to address blight and vacant properties.
"It pushes investors away and families away," Williams said. "No one wants to look out their window and see an abandoned house." She aims to rebuild her community through her projects, which include four other properties in Jackson, including a renovated eight-unit apartment and a duplex.
