T
he San Francisco Chronicle has endorsed Daniel Lurie, a philanthropist and heir to the Levi Strauss fortune, as its preferred candidate for mayor of San Francisco. The newspaper's editorial board praised Lurie for his ability to amass a strong campaign without getting bogged down in controversy, describing him as a "welcome balance of compassion and toughness." They also highlighted his experience running an anti-poverty nonprofit and his plans to tackle housing and homelessness.
Lurie has promised to be aggressive on housing development, cut red tape for small businesses, and create 1,500 shelter homes within his first six months in office. He has also pledged to take a hands-on approach to managing city departments and addressing quality-of-life issues.
The Chronicle's endorsement comes at the expense of incumbent Mayor London Breed, who they credit with navigating the city through the pandemic but criticize for her handling of smaller issues such as street cleanliness and her signature Dream Keeper initiative. The paper suggests that Lurie has a better chance of delivering on his promises due to his temperament and connections within the community.
