T
he San Antonio City Council is set to discuss a multibillion-dollar plan for a downtown sports and entertainment district, which could include a new stadium for the Spurs. The project, code-named Project Marvel, has been in the works for over a year and could cost between $3 billion and $4 billion to build. The city will consider conceptual plans, feasibility studies, and potential funding sources for the first time publicly this week.
The development would include an expanded convention center, upgrades to the Alamodome, a new event venue, and a convention center hotel. A potential $1 billion arena for the Spurs could be built on the site of the Institute of Texan Cultures. City officials have been in talks with Spurs executives about a stadium for almost two years.
The city has required parties involved in the project to sign nondisclosure agreements, keeping details hidden from the public. However, the city will receive public input before proceeding with plans. The Spurs are also building a $511 million human performance campus near The Rim neighborhood. This trend of mixed-use developments surrounding sports stadiums is becoming increasingly popular, as seen in The Star at Frisco, a development surrounding the Dallas Cowboys' practice field.
