he College of Architecture, Art and Construction has named Todd Usher director of its Master of Real Estate Development (MRED) program. A Clemson alumnus of four degrees and a nationally acclaimed builder, Usher brings more than three decades of industry, entrepreneurship and academia to the post.
Dean Ece Erdogmus praised his “unique mix of research, practical expertise and leadership.” She added that his emphasis on sustainable development and stakeholder partnership will further raise the MRED’s regional and national influence.
Usher earned a Ph.D. in planning, design and the built environment, plus master’s degrees in construction science, management and business administration from Clemson. He founded Addison Homes in Greenville, a firm that specializes in high‑performance, resilient and sustainable construction. Under his guidance, Addison Homes has received multiple U.S. Department of Energy Housing Innovation Awards, as well as honors from the National Association of Home Builders and the U.S. Green Building Council.
Speaking about the program’s future, Usher said, “We’re committed to expanding enrollment and opportunities—deepening ties with the real‑estate community, boosting research, and offering new courses and a potential minor for undergraduates.” He has taught graduate courses in construction operations, building systems and sustainable real‑estate practices since 2021 and frequently presents at national building‑science and energy‑efficiency conferences. His consulting firm, Addison Consulting, helps professionals adopt high‑performance, science‑driven construction standards.
Usher’s affection for Clemson is evident. “From my first day as a student, I sensed there’s something special in these hills,” he remarked. “The Clemson community feels like family, and whether it’s a ‘Go Tigers!’ shout at a distant airport or a Clemson ring on a train in Italy, I’m reminded that Clemson is more than a university—it’s a lifelong bond.”
