Unlocking Shared Housing Potential: Opportunities for Renters and Homeowners

Airbnb-friendly Apartments expand globally, launching in the UK with Greystar as a founding partner.

T
wo years ago, we launched Airbnb-friendly Apartments (AFA) in partnership with top US real estate companies, making it easier for renters to find apartment buildings that allow part-time hosting. Since then, we've expanded AFA and are now introducing Airbnb-friendly Condos (AFC), which includes the expansion of AFA under Airbnb-friendly Real Estate.

We're excited to announce that Airbnb-friendly Apartments is now available in the UK, thanks to our partnership with Greystar. This brings nearly 1,500 units across three locations in London to renters looking for flexible housing options. According to Maria Hatch, Senior Director at Greystar, "This adds financial flexibility for residents and helps ensure everything runs smoothly."

In the UK, 79% of renters seek ways to supplement their income, with 55% considering home-sharing. AFA offers a solution by providing landlords with oversight while empowering renters to earn extra money. Renters must comply with local regulations, building policies, and Airbnb's community standards.

AFA has continued to grow in the US, with over 750 buildings and 200,000 units participating. New partners like Geolo Capital and Roundhouse have joined, along with 12 of the top 50 National Multifamily Housing Council Owners and 14 Managers. As of Q3 2024, more than 2,000 renters have earned income through AFA, totaling over $14 million.

We're also launching Airbnb-friendly Condos (AFC), building on successful pilot partnerships with developers PMG and Related Group in Miami. AFC offers streamlined tools for HOAs and property managers to facilitate hosting. Developer GFO Investments is an AFC partner, optimizing Airbnb hosting for residents of its recently completed Gale building in Miami.

According to Jesse Stein, Global Head of Real Estate at Airbnb, "AFA offers a valuable opportunity to earn income through Airbnb while away. The sustained growth demonstrates the versatility of this model." Jim Alderman has been hired to lead the Airbnb-friendly Condo program and plans to expand internationally to Latin America in 2025.
