US government sues developer for desecrating Native American sites and remains in Richmond Hill

Developer of Waterways neighborhood allegedly violated permit provisions to protect cultural resources.

A
Richmond Hill real estate developer, Savannah Land Holdings, is facing a federal lawsuit for allegedly destroying thousands of Native American artifacts and human remains. The company developed the Waterways neighborhood in Richmond Hill and was required to protect cultural resources at the site as part of its 404 permit from the US Army Corps of Engineers.

The government claims that Savannah Land Holdings failed to comply with the permit, leading to "extensive violations" including improper handling and destruction of artifacts and human remains. The lawsuit states that there are 18 archaeological sites on the property and that the company was supposed to consult with relevant authorities when objects were discovered.

However, the complaint alleges that the company did not notify anyone about the discoveries or take steps to protect the artifacts. As a result, many items have been lost or disposed of, including 80,000 artifacts that have not been properly curated and 3,000 that are missing altogether.

The US government is seeking an injunction to stop development at the property, as well as a security plan to prevent further looting of remaining artifacts. The company may also be required to pay a civil penalty as restitution for its alleged violations.
