Wheatfield town board votes to eliminate property tax assessment fee

Wheatfield Twp. supervisors vote unanimously to eliminate 2025 real estate millage rate despite some disagreement.

W
heatfield Township supervisors voted unanimously on December 2 to eliminate the township's real estate millage rate for 2025, despite some reservations from one supervisor. The decision will save residents money on property taxes starting next year. Supervisor Jeff Smith argued that the township has a surplus of funds and spends too much on collecting taxes, citing an example where the township collects around $33,000 after expenses.

Supervisor Jim Fuller expressed concerns about eliminating the millage rate, saying it would be a shame to lose the small amount of money collected, which he believes is worth paying for the services provided by the township. However, Supervisor Phil Vogel ultimately supported eliminating the millage rate.

The meeting also covered other topics, including financial planning, personnel changes, and community updates. Supervisors approved setting a December 17 special meeting to adopt the 2025 budget and voted to terminate a payroll services contract with Rob Morris. They also raised tax collector commissions from 4.5 percent to 5 percent for future collectors.

Other decisions included hiring Anthony Barrick as a township employee, allocating $460,500 received from PPL into certificates of deposit earning 4.1 percent interest, and purchasing a new computer for the township office. Residents raised various issues, including concerns about wide-load vehicles on township roads and requests for jake brake signs.

Supervisors also approved donations to local organizations, such as the Duncannon Senior Center and Bloomfield Public Library. Resident Kraig Nace reported on topics covered during a recent Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors forum he attended with Vogel, highlighting discussions on solar development, recreational planning, and agricultural collaboration.
