PORR AG is positioning its PORR Healthcare division as a comprehensive service provider for healthcare properties. The company offers an integrated range of services that includes the planning, construction, and technical equipment of healthcare facilities. This approach responds to the increasing demand for specialised healthcare infrastructure, which is significantly driven by demographic developments in Europe.
The portfolio expansion was reinforced at the end of 2025 by the acquisition of VAMED Standortentwicklung und Engineering GmbH. This acquisition led to the integration of more than 30 additional healthcare projects, particularly in Austria and Romania. Significant projects include the AUVA Rehabilitation Centre Meidling, the expansion of Vienna's Hanusch Hospital, the Reutte District Hospital in Tyrol, and Wiener Neustadt Hospital.
Karl-Heinz Strauss, CEO of PORR, emphasises that, by expanding its capacities, PORR now offers not only structural planning and realisation but also operational organisation and medical technology planning. This comprehensive approach enables the handling of healthcare property projects from conception to full commissioning and, according to Strauss, represents a unique selling point compared to competitors. The expanded service portfolio will be successively implemented in all of the company's core markets.
Requirements for Contemporary Healthcare Buildings
The complexity of modern healthcare buildings requires specialised expertise, as the global healthcare system is subject to constant change. PORR addresses these challenges with modular construction methods that allow for flexible adaptation of wards and floor plans to new technologies or changing clinical requirements. Another focus is on technical infrastructure in the wake of digitisation and the trend towards the 'Smart Hospital'. Here, buildings are designed as networked systems that support artificial intelligence, telemedicine, and the digital networking of patients, staff, and care processes. Digital planning processes such as Building Information Modelling (BIM) are already used in early phases, creating detailed data models of the buildings. Additionally, PORR integrates sustainability criteria and resource-saving construction methods to address the high energy and water consumption of clinics. Simulation models and integrative planning approaches help to optimise the efficiency of hospital operations, for example, by minimising unnecessary journeys.
International Reference Projects
PORR is currently constructing the new Pavilion 6 at the Hanusch Hospital in Vienna for the Austrian Health Insurance Fund. The turnkey project covers an area of approximately 10,500 m² with 66 beds and an operating theatre, including the integration of innovative medical technology. In Reutte, the district hospital is being renovated and technically modernised in several phases while operations continue. Modernised areas for various specialist departments are being created here.
PORR is also active in other European home markets. In Poland, the company is realising five projects, including the construction of the Oncology Hospital in Wrocław. This undertaking, with an order value of nearly 250 million EUR, represents the largest public investment in the region's healthcare infrastructure. The building, implemented using a design-and-build process, will comprise over 100,000 m² of gross floor area, offering four above-ground floors, one basement level, 26 ward units, and 30 outpatient treatment units. Another Polish project is an interdisciplinary treatment and diagnostic centre for the Mother and Child Institute in Warsaw, also using a design-and-build process, which includes the supply and installation of highly specialised medical technology. This quarter will also see the completion of the new cardiology department at Bielański Hospital in Warsaw, equipped with state-of-the-art medical technology such as an angiography system.
In the Czech Republic, PORR constructed the Intensive Care Simulation Centre (SCIM) for the University Hospital Motol and Homolka in Prague. This training facility enables exercises for critical clinical situations. The planning and construction of the technologically demanding premises were carried out using Building Information Modelling (BIM) and LEAN methods. The project sum amounted to approximately 20.4 million EUR. Mr. Strauss confirms that PORR Healthcare stands for the development of future-proof healthcare infrastructure.
