With the execution of a large concrete pour involving approximately 1,600 cubic metres of concrete, PORR Hochbau Nord has achieved a significant milestone in the construction of the Tiefstack heat storage facility. This newly constructed reinforced concrete base slab will serve as the foundation for a future heat storage facility more than 50 metres high, which is intended to make a substantial contribution to the transformation of Hamburg's heat supply.
The completion of the circular reinforced concrete base slab represents a crucial construction phase. The slab measures 37 metres in diameter and has a thickness of 1.20 metres. Its primary function is to safely support the weight of the future heat storage facility, as well as the millions of litres of hot water it will contain. For its construction, approximately 1,600 cubic metres of concrete were poured in a single operation.
Specialised Expertise in the Project Course
PORR's work at the Tiefstack site followed a clear process structure. Prior to the involvement of the building construction division, the necessary groundwork had been laid by PORR Spezialtiefbau (specialised civil engineering). This division was responsible for establishing the deep foundation, thereby providing the fundamental basis for one of Hamburg's most important infrastructure projects for the energy transition. Subsequently, PORR Hochbau Nord took over the construction site and assumed responsibility for the foundations, construction execution, and project management. This illustrates the internal synergy of PORR's competencies, with the work in specialised civil engineering seamlessly transitioning into building construction.
- —Preparation of the construction site and formwork
- —Assessment of weather conditions for the concreting process
- —Logistical planning of concrete deliveries
- —Monitoring the curing and post-treatment of the concrete
The precise coordination of all involved teams was already important during the production of the base slab. From detailed preparation to concreting and careful post-treatment, a smooth process was ensured. With the completion of the base slab, the last joint construction phase between specialised civil engineering and building construction for this part of the heat storage facility has also concluded.
Outlook for Further Project Development
Following the handover of the construction site, a specialised company will now undertake the construction of the actual storage tank. However, PORR's presence at the Tiefstack site is not yet complete. Afterwards, PORR Hochbau Nord will take over the construction of the adjacent technical building and will accompany the project in subsequent phases. The successful completion of the base slab demonstrates that complex infrastructure projects like this can only be realised through the coordinated interaction of various specialist disciplines. The foundation created in Tiefstack not only forms the basis for a future structure but also represents a vital component for Hamburg's climate-friendly heat supply and thus for the local energy transition.
