A study among professionals in the letting sector has identified five key areas of activity where human expertise remains indispensable, irrespective of the increasing implementation of artificial intelligence in the real estate sector. The research, conducted by Propoly, found that relationship building, dispute resolution, and the assessment of complex situations are least suited for automation by AI.

The findings, published as part of the 'State of the Lettings Industry' report, are based on surveys of over 300 letting agencies. The study underscores the industry's conviction that empathetic communication and the management of sensitive situations cannot be replaced by algorithms, even in an increasingly technology-driven working environment.

Limits of AI in Lettings

The survey results show a clear preference for human involvement in certain critical areas. While AI can efficiently handle routine and data-intensive tasks, respondents emphasise that the ability to recognise nuances, interpret emotions, and find tailored solutions in unique situations remains a human domain. This is particularly relevant when dealing with tenants and landlords, where trust and personal advice play a significant role.

  • Building relationships and nurturing client contacts
  • Handling conflicts and disputes
  • Assessing and managing complex situations
  • Empathetic communication and advice

A spokesperson for Propoly commented on the results, indirectly stressing that the value of human professionals in the letting business is undeniable, even in the age of AI. While automation contributes to efficiency gains, the core competencies that define a successful relationship between tenant and landlord remain firmly in human hands. This particularly includes the ability to solve problems while considering individual circumstances.

Future of the Real Estate Industry

These insights are indicative of the future development of the real estate industry. They suggest that the focus of technology should be on supporting human work and automating repetitive processes, rather than on the complete replacement of human interaction. The integration of AI is expected to continue to increase efficiency while simultaneously solidifying the role of the real estate agent as a trusted advisor and intermediary.

The combination of advanced technology and human expertise is regarded as the way forward to meet the complex demands of the real estate market. Estate agencies face the task of training their employees accordingly and strategically deploying technology to achieve the greatest possible benefit for all parties involved, while maintaining the quality of service.
