The second expert discussion as part of the dialogue process initiated by Munich City Council on the future of the Munich Wholesale Market has been held. The meeting brought together representatives from politics and administration, as well as the resident traders' association, to discuss the essential location question for the wholesale market. This discussion forms an integral part of a series of a total of four planned roundtables, organised by Märkte München, to address central future issues of the wholesale market in a structured manner.

The aim of these expert discussions is to collectively develop sound foundations. These are intended to serve as a basis for further political and technical evaluation. Märkte München is thus pursuing the endeavour to create long-term perspectives for the wholesale market that meet both economic and urban development requirements.

Location Analysis and Consensus Finding

The Municipal Department has conducted exploratory talks with various stakeholders in previous weeks. These included municipalities in the Munich surrounding area, representatives of the Free State of Bavaria, and other stakeholders. These discussions served to evaluate potential sites that could fundamentally be considered for a future wholesale market. In parallel, the traders' association actively participated in the discussions to present their perspectives and needs.

Deputy Mayor Mona Fuchs, who chairs the expert discussions on the future of the wholesale market, highlighted the importance of the process and stated that a broad consensus had already been reached in the first expert discussion that the Munich metropolitan area will continue to require an efficient wholesale market in the future. She further emphasised that with the current meeting, the next step has been taken and the location issue is being concretised. Fundamentally, the clear objective here is to assign the current site in Sendling to an alternative development, in accordance with the provisions of the coalition agreement.

  • Identification of potential new locations in the Munich metropolitan area.
  • Development of sound foundations for political decisions.
  • Involvement of relevant stakeholders from politics, administration, and trade.
  • Safeguarding the future efficiency of the wholesale market.

The Deputy Mayor highlighted the constructive atmosphere and the commitment of all involved parties: politics, administration, and the traders' association are working together to secure the future of the wholesale market. The insights and results gained from the second expert discussion will now serve as an important basis for further action. The overarching goal remains to jointly develop viable options for a sustainable wholesale market in the Munich metropolitan area, thereby ensuring supply and trade in the region in the long term.
