The Düsseldorf Opera House is facing restrictions shortly before the start of the new season. During a routine safety inspection conducted during the summer break, structural defects were discovered in the load-bearing structure in the front area of the stage tower, above the proscenium arch. A responsible structural engineering firm subsequently withheld safety clearance for the use of the stage tower for rehearsals and performances.
These findings necessitate adjustments to the performance schedule of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein. Specifically, the theatre festival planned for Sunday, 13th September, to mark the opening of the season, will be cancelled, along with at least eight further performances. This includes, among others, the entire run of Giacomo Puccini's 'Madama Butterfly'. Furthermore, the premiere of Richard Wagner's 'Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg', originally scheduled for Sunday, 11th October 2026, must be postponed. The costume sale in the opera foyer, as announced in the festival's accompanying programme, will, however, proceed.
The identified structural impairments affect parts of the load-bearing structure in the front stage tower. A significant portion of this structure dates back to the reopening of the Düsseldorf Opera House after the Second World War. The existing loads within the framework must be redistributed to ensure the continued safety of the working galleries located to the left and right of the stage, as well as the portal bridge.
The municipal Immobilien Projekt Management Düsseldorf GmbH (IPM), which is responsible for the ongoing upgrade of the Opera House, is working intensively with specialist experts on the temporary securing of the load-bearing structure. The plan involves installing special wire ropes and replacement supports. Further details regarding the changes to the performance schedule are available on the Deutsche Oper am Rhein's website.
