In Ebern in the Lower Franconian district of Haßberge, the Free State of Bavaria has marked the topping-out ceremony for the new building of the Landesbaudirektion. The state is providing around 31.4 million euros for the scheme in the town centre, which is being delivered on the site of a former cinema and restaurant. Completion and occupation of the building are scheduled for next year.
The construction project is characterised by high ecological standards. It is a climate-friendly timber structure that was planned digitally and designed to be virtually energy self-sufficient during operations. As part of the sensitive site development, a mature chestnut tree in the middle of the plot is being preserved and will form the centrepiece of the inner courtyard in future.
Capacity expansion and sustainable administrative structure
With the completion of the administrative building, the Landesbaudirektion will significantly expand its staffing capacity. While 71 employees currently work at the location, the workforce is expected to grow to at least 100 in future. Marking the celebrations, Bavarian Construction Minister Christian Bernreiter emphasised that the measure deliberately creates career opportunities and modern workplaces outside metropolitan areas in order to promote equivalent living conditions across the Free State.
- —Technical supervision and coordination of demanding structural engineering projects for the Federal Ministry of Defence
- —Assisting upcoming multi-billion investments by the US visiting forces at the Grafenwöhr base
- —Advancing transport technology innovations such as autonomous driving and the digitalisation of the Bavarian road network
- —Testing alternative drive systems, including the deployment of electric lorries in road maintenance operations
Growing volume of responsibilities in federal construction and road building
Serving as a liaison within the Bavarian state construction administration, the Landesbaudirektion bundles structural engineering and road building projects and supports the local state building authorities. Measures for civil defence and the military currently hold particular priority. In the current year alone, more than 400 million euros have already been delivered in Bavarian federal construction; in the coming years, this volume is expected to rise to up to one billion euros annually.
Construction Minister Bernreiter thanked the Schweinfurt State Building Authority for the swift execution of the project. He noted that Bavaria is clearly committed to the Bundeswehr and international alliance partners, which is why creating first-class physical infrastructure and strengthening staffing at the responsible directorate play a central role.
