WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management (WHU) plans to consolidate its teaching and research activities into a future campus in Düsseldorf. To this end, the WHU Foundation and the City of Düsseldorf have announced the commencement of exclusive negotiations regarding a specific area on the peninsula along Kesselstraße in the MedienHafen. This endeavour is considered a significant step in Düsseldorf's urban development and is intended to strengthen the city's position as an international hub for business, research, and education.

Mayor Dr Stephan Keller commented on the project's potential, emphasising that the new WHU campus represents an outstanding flagship project for education, innovation, and entrepreneurship in Düsseldorf. He expressed conviction that the campus could, in the long term, develop a similar city-shaping significance to previous major urban development projects, such as the Rheinufertunnel or the Wehrhahnlinie. Dr Keller underscored the investment in Düsseldorf's future viability and the attractiveness the campus will create for international students, talent, and businesses. He highlighted the joint effort of the city, state, university, and foundation.

Location Factors and Collaborations

WHU already maintains a location in Düsseldorf's Schwanenhöfen. For the planned new campus, a future vision is currently being developed in collaboration with the university's own community. The city actively promoted the full relocation of WHU, with the cooperation of various departments creating the necessary conditions. The planned occupancy of the new campus on Kesselstraße is scheduled for 2034.

Minister President Hendrik Wüst highlighted that WHU's decision for Düsseldorf underscores North Rhine-Westphalia's international attractiveness as a centre for cutting-edge research and entrepreneurial ideas. He referred to the recent granting of excellence status to the University of Cologne as well as the consortium comprising Ruhr-Universität Bochum and TU Dortmund, which will result in North Rhine-Westphalia having five universities and consortia of excellence in the future – the highest number among the German federal states. Wüst stressed that WHU, as a leading university for business start-ups, could provide additional impetus for innovation and economic growth with its Düsseldorf plans, and there it would encounter an outstanding university landscape and globally successful companies. He saw the strengthening of cooperation between scientific prowess and entrepreneurial courage as an opportunity to translate new ideas into successful businesses and to inspire young people for North Rhine-Westphalia.

Future Prospects for Education

Dr Dr Christoph Glaser, Chairman of the WHU Foundation, explained that WHU has stood for entrepreneurial excellence and innovation for over 40 years and will also play a leading role in shaping the transformation driven by artificial intelligence and societal change. He emphasised that this requires leaders who take responsibility in business and society. WHU creates the basis for this with its commitment to excellence, entrepreneurship, and responsibility.

Professor Dr Christian Andres, Rector of WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management, added that the leadership roles of the future are becoming increasingly complex given AI, geopolitical shifts, and societal change. He stated that this demands judgement, agility, and networked thinking. Universities must therefore develop into hubs where students, companies, research institutions, and public bodies come together. Professor Andres saw the new campus as a unique opportunity to establish such a place for exchange, creativity, and entrepreneurial courage.
