The global law firm Freshfields advised Allianz Global Investors (AllianzGI) on the acquisition of UOB Asset Management (UOBAM). UOBAM is the asset management business of United Overseas Bank Group, headquartered in Singapore. This transaction gives Allianz Global Investors access to a number of significant growth markets in the region and consolidates its existing presence.
Allianz Global Investors, as the asset management arm of the Frankfurt-listed Allianz SE, will significantly expand its business activities in Southeast Asia through this acquisition. The integration of UOBAM, an established Southeast Asian asset manager with 28 billion EUR in assets under management, is a strategic step to strengthen its market position.
Strategic Market Entry and Asset Growth
The acquisition enables Allianz Global Investors to enter new markets such as Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam. Furthermore, its presence in Singapore, Taiwan, and Indonesia will be strengthened. UOB Asset Management is active in eight key markets in Asia, which significantly expands AllianzGI's geographical reach and allows for diversified market development.
- —Entry into new growth markets: Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam.
- —Strengthening of presence in existing markets: Singapore, Taiwan, Indonesia.
- —Access to 28 billion EUR in assets under management through UOBAM.
The transaction includes a long-term distribution agreement. This agreement secures Allianz Global Investors permanent access to United Overseas Bank Group's retail client network. This is crucial for expanding the client base and increasing assets under management.
Following the completion of the acquisition, Allianz Global Investors' assets under management for clients in the Asia-Pacific region will grow to over 170 billion EUR. This substantial increase creates a solid foundation to offer comprehensive support to investors across the Southeast Asian region. The transaction underscores the strategic importance of the Asian market for global asset managers.
