The DIY chain BAUHAUS has taken over the former Hellweg site on Mittagstraße in Magdeburg's Neue Neustadt district. The property, which has been vacant for about a year, comprises a retail area of over 17,000 square metres. This transaction allows BAUHAUS to significantly expand its presence in the region, as the company will relocate its existing site within Magdeburg.
Extensive conversion and modernisation measures are planned for the acquired building in the coming months. The aim is to reopen the specialist centre in the first quarter of 2027. With its larger retail area, the new property on Mittagstraße provides the basis for an expanded product range and additional services, representing a strategic further development for BAUHAUS.
Site Factors and History
The new site on Mittagstraße is conveniently located on the north-south running federal highway 71, ensuring good accessibility from Magdeburg and the surrounding region. The origins of the now-acquired property date back to the 1990s.
With this move, BAUHAUS is relocating its current specialist centre from Havelstraße. The former specialist centre on Havelstraße, with an area of around 8,000 square metres, was opened on 14 January 1991 in a former vehicle hall of the GDR's National People's Army and was one of the first BAUHAUS specialist centres in reunified Germany. After more than 35 years, the Magdeburg site is thus gaining a new spatial location.
Continuity and Modernisation
As part of the relocation, the employees of the current specialist centre will fully transfer to the new site. BAUHAUS thus combines the long-standing expertise of the existing team with the opportunities offered by a larger and modernised specialist centre. For customers, the accustomed personal advice and expertise of the Magdeburg team will continue to be ensured in the future.
