On 24 September, BIG direkt gesund marked a significant milestone in the conversion of the former Trösser furniture store in Aachen's Quartier Nord. This event was celebrated together with the project partners involved. The future premises, covering approximately 2,000 square metres, will accommodate modern office, service, and collaboration areas for the health insurance company by mid-2027. The previously enclosed facade on the first floor has already been opened up and lightened by numerous glass elements, contributing to improved natural light penetration. The developer and future landlord, Landmarken AG, hosted the event.
Sustainability and employee focus as core criteria
BIG direkt gesund's decision on the location, which was supported by Heiko Keller from Cubion Immobilien AG, was significantly based on economic and ecological aspects, as well as good accessibility. Peter Kaetsch, Chairman of the Board at BIG, emphasised that the investment in Quartier Nord represents a conscious investment in the future of the health insurance company. He highlighted that the new location combines sustainability, attractive working conditions, and excellent accessibility for the 160 employees in Aachen. These are necessary prerequisites to ensure a contemporary working environment and provide optimal care for policyholders.
The spaces on Krefelder Straße will be extensively modernised and brought up to a technical standard that enables significant CO₂ savings compared to the previous, listed location in Aachen Rothe Erde. Daniel Gilles, Project Manager at Landmarken, explained that, among other things, energy-efficient building technology and power supply from a photovoltaic system will be implemented. Planning prioritised the needs of employees. Jan Oelze, Managing Partner at the consulting and planning firm pro m², reported that the wishes and requirements of the workforce were identified in surveys and workshops and directly integrated into the design of the new working environment.
Modern working environments and long-term commitment
The design of the new premises is consistently aligned with the demands of modern working environments. This includes the creation of open meeting and communication areas, flexible meeting rooms, and quiet zones for concentrated work. A customer centre for personal consultations is also planned. Generous window areas are intended to provide ample daylight and a pleasant working atmosphere. These design principles reflect an understanding of contemporary office environments that facilitate both collaboration and individual work.
BIG direkt gesund underscores its clear commitment to the Aachen location with a ten-year lease term. Peter Kaetsch affirmed that the city is not only an important corporate location but also an attractive place to work and live for employees. He stressed that the long-term tenancy ensures that policyholders will continue to find an easily accessible point of contact for personal advice in the Imperial City, in addition to digital services. The conversion of the former furniture store also contributes to the further development of the entire Quartier Nord. By repurposing this existing property, a total of 4,000 square metres of modern space will be created, which can be used for working, shopping, and leisure activities.
