On 16 September 2026, BIRKENSTOCK opened one of its largest European stores in Berlin-Mitte, on Münzstraße. This new retail location covers an area of approximately 125 square metres. The opening marks a strategic presence for the company in its home market and connects BIRKENSTOCK's long-standing shoemaking tradition with the cultural and creative identity of the German capital.

The store concept is deeply rooted in craftsmanship, a theme that extends from the interior design to collaborations with the local creative scene. The design of the new store was developed under the guiding principle of 'Grounded in Culture'. It deliberately integrates references to Berlin's culture and combines them with the materials and manufacturing techniques characteristic of BIRKENSTOCK. These elements have been part of the zeitgeist and everyday culture since the 1970s.

Architecture and Materiality

The store's design echoes the architectural aesthetic of Berlin-Mitte, partly through the use of warm exposed concrete. Moss-covered elements reinterpret the planters that once characterised the streetscape during the GDR era. Materials such as cork and jute, which are inextricably associated with the iconic BIRKENSTOCK footbed, are consistently present in the interior. This is complemented by naturally shaped wooden structures, which reinforce the connection to craftsmanship.

Creative Collaborations and Integration

As part of the opening, BIRKENSTOCK presented various creative partnerships. Berlin's Yellow Nose Studio, which also designed seating and accessories for the store, offered a workshop on making wooden pendants. Analog Glass designed two chandeliers for the premises, which take up the shape of the BIRKENSTOCK footbed and were crafted from hand-blown glass in Berlin. The Berlin DJ collective Sound Metaphors curated the musical accompaniment for the opening, played through a specially made H.A.N.D. HIFI sound system made of cork in the characteristic BIRKENSTOCK blue.

This integration of local artists and artisans underlines the ambition to establish the new location not merely as a sales area, but as a place for cultural exchange and brand identification. The store thus serves as a striking symbol of BIRKENSTOCK's roots in the historic yet dynamic environment of the German capital.
