The 22nd ECE Retail & Placemakers Meeting, considered the largest industry event in European retail, recently took place at Hamburg's Fischauktionshalle. The event brought together approximately 800 experts, decision-makers and partners to exchange views on current trends, developments and innovative concepts. Key topics included new projects in the ECE portfolio as well as international expansion trends in the retail sector. Since 2003, the meeting has served as an established platform for networking and business exchange.

Participants came from various segments, including representatives from the retail sector, the hospitality industry, placemaking and entertainment, as well as investor partners. The interdisciplinary approach provided comprehensive insights into the complex requirements and potential of the real estate and retail markets. Discussions focused on strategies for the sustainable design of retail spaces and their integrative role in urban centres.

ECE Retail Awards Presented

After a longer break, the ECE Retail Awards were presented again during the meeting. These awards honour retail partners who have distinguished themselves through special successes and innovative approaches. The award categories and winners reflect the current dynamics and demands of the retail sector. The concepts recognised illustrate different strategies that lead to success in a competitive market environment.

  • In the “Best Performance” category, New Yorker was recognised for its long-standing success story and robust growth.
  • The Chinese retailer Xiaomi, which recently opened its first three stores within the ECE portfolio and plans further expansion, received an award for “Best Innovation”.
  • The award for the “Best Cross Border” concept went to the Danish retail chain Normal, which carried out its expansion into Austria in cooperation with ECE.

Joanna Fisher, CEO of ECE Marketplaces, commented on the awards ceremony. She emphasised that the award-winning companies – New Yorker, Xiaomi and Normal – represented the performance, innovative strength and commitment of internationally operating retailers. These qualities were highlighted as essential factors for the further development of the retail market. As a leading shopping centre operator and the largest retail landlord in Europe, ECE sees itself as playing a role in actively supporting and promoting these developments.

The continuity of this event since 2003 underscores the importance of exchange between key market players. The focus on placemaking and hospitality, alongside traditional retail, signals a comprehensive consideration of location development and user experience. The meeting thus serves as a barometer for the development and strategic direction of the European retail sector.
