The global law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer advised a banking consortium on a financing transaction for Amprion. This transaction involves an “Energy Transition Green Revolving Credit Facility” amounting to EUR 6.5 billion. The leading consortium consists of BNP Paribas, ING, and UniCredit. Securing this financing underscores the relevance of sustainable investments in the infrastructure sector.
Amprion is an established transmission system operator at the European level. The company operates an 11,000-kilometre high-voltage grid stretching from the North Sea to the Alps, crossing seven federal states in Germany. This network is essential for supplying electricity to 29 million people. The integration of sustainable principles into corporate financing reflects Amprion’s long-standing commitment to environmental and climate protection.
Sustainability Commitment and EU Taxonomy
With the conclusion of this new financing facility, Amprion’s sustainability commitment is anchored in the company's central revolving credit line. This is a consistent step, as Amprion has pursued a stringent sustainability strategy for years. To maintain its status as a “Green Pure Player” over the entire term of the financing, it is required that more than 90 percent of Amprion's sales revenue complies with the criteria of the EU Taxonomy. This requirement sets clear standards for the company's green transformation.
The underlying syndicated loan agreement is initially designed for a term of five years. Two options for extending the term by one year each are also integrated. An option to increase the amount by EUR 2 billion is also part of the agreement. These options are each subject to the approval of the participating banks. The structure of the contract offers Amprion long-term planning security and flexibility for future projects within the scope of the energy transition.
Strategic Implications of Green Financing
Freshfields' successful advisory role in this transaction highlights the increasing importance of green financing for large infrastructure companies. Capital markets are increasingly rewarding companies that pursue a clear and demonstrable sustainability strategy. For Amprion, this financing represents a vital instrument for making the necessary investments in the modernisation and expansion of the electricity grid, which are indispensable for the successful implementation of the energy transition.
