Alphabet, Google's parent company, has quadrupled its office presence in Miami. The company signed a lease for around 45,000 square feet at 1450 Brickell Avenue earlier this spring, where it previously occupied approximately 10,000 square feet. The technology giant has been located in the 34-storey building since 2016.
The 1.1 million-square-foot skyscraper was completed in 2010 by developer Rilea Group. According to records, the building is now owned by Amkin Management, a company belonging to Ramon Llorens. The office primarily serves as a base for Google's Cloud and sales teams for Latin America. A source familiar with the transaction stated that the company is not currently utilising the entire space but has leased the additional premises to ensure flexibility for future growth.
Inflow of Founders Influences Expansion
Google's expansion correlates significantly with the relocation of Google's billionaire founders to Miami. Last year, Larry Page acquired a property in Coconut Grove for nearly US$190 million. This year, Sergey Brin paid US$51 million for a waterfront property in Miami Beach. Brin has also positioned himself as a clear critic of a proposed wealth tax in California, Google's original home, and has donated millions to campaigns to prevent this tax.
This move is a further boost to Miami's endeavour to establish itself as a technology hub. Since the pandemic, Amazon has opened a 75,000-square-foot office in Wynwood, while Palantir moved its headquarters from Denver to Aventura. A Google spokesperson declined to comment; a representative for the landlord was unavailable for comment.
Miami as an Emerging Technology Location
Recent developments underscore Miami's growing importance for technology companies. The combination of attractive living conditions for executives and the strategic location for Latin American markets contributes to the city being chosen for expansions of this kind. The increased presence of major technology players such as Google, Amazon, and Palantir is increasingly solidifying Miami's position in the global technology market.
