Construction work for the new regional parcel centre in Frauenfeld has officially commenced. This investment by Post aims to sustainably strengthen the logistics hub in the canton of Thurgau. The project is a response to continuously increasing parcel volumes, intended to ensure reliable delivery in Eastern Switzerland and nationwide. With this strategic measure, Post is reacting to the demands of growth in e-commerce and the associated increased need for efficient logistics solutions.
Johannes Cramer, Head of Logistics Services at Post, emphasised the commitment to the region and the long-term investment in the core business of logistics at the groundbreaking ceremony. The total investment for the new building amounts to 200 million Swiss francs. In the course of this project, approximately 220 new jobs are also to be created.
The plot of land for the new regional parcel centre was acquired by Post under a building lease agreement. A significant advantage of the chosen location is its immediate proximity to the existing national parcel centre. This setup enables the utilisation of important synergies between the two facilities. The Frauenfeld parcel centre already has a connection to the railway network, which will also benefit the new centre. Post primarily uses the rail connection for internal parcel transport between the various large parcel centres in Switzerland.
The completion and commissioning of the conveying technology for the new centre is expected before Christmas 2029. After its full commissioning, the regional centre will have the capacity to sort up to 12,000 parcels per hour. This performance is significant in the context of the planned modernisation and refurbishment of the national parcel centres in Härkingen (SO), Daillens (VD), and Frauenfeld (TG) over the next 10 to 15 years, each of which is over 25 years old. The new sorting centre is intended to partially replace the existing parcel centre in Frauenfeld during the conversion phases and supplement its capacity after its refurbishment.
Simultaneously with the expansion of infrastructure, Post is optimising its delivery processes. Customers will be able to track their parcels in real-time via the Post app. This includes a notification the day before delivery with an estimated time window of two to four hours. On the day of delivery, the time window is further refined to 40 to 90 minutes. In the event of significant delays, customers also receive a corresponding message. Shortly before the actual delivery, a link is provided that enables minute-by-minute parcel tracking.
