Mayor Zohran Mamdani is increasing the available grants for local organisations that promote trade, although the amount may not appear excessively high at first glance. Mamdani and the New York City Department of Small Business Services (SBS) are providing $8.4 million for Business Improvement Districts (BIDs), which are intended to finance public art installations, street cleaning, lighting, and signage.
Although $8.4 million is not a spectacular sum, the administration expects this investment to boost footfall for 20,000 businesses across the five boroughs. This funding allocation represents the largest single payment of its kind. Mayor Mamdani emphasised in a statement that it is not enough to make it easier to start small businesses; it must also be made easier to visit them.
Strategic Investment for Vibrant Neighbourhoods
The Mayor explained that his administration’s commitment to small businesses not only includes reducing bureaucratic hurdles and cutting fines, but also investing in the neighbourhoods around bodegas, bookshops, and restaurants. The aim is for New York City to be lined with 'OPEN' signs all year round.
The grants have already been disbursed. Brooklyn received the largest share of the available funds, with $2.7 million for 32 organisations. 17 institutions in the Bronx received $1.55 million. Manhattan and Queens received similar amounts. The Bronx received less overall funding, while Staten Island received the least, with $550,000 for only seven organisations.
